Checo Perez Crashes Out on Lap 1 of Monaco GP

Perez loses control on flying lap, slides into wall

Magnussen incident replays show Perez hit from behind

Monaco, May 28, 2022 - Sergio "Checo" Perez's Monaco Grand Prix weekend took a disastrous turn on Saturday when he crashed out on his flying lap in qualifying, handing pole position to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Replays showed that Haas driver Kevin Magnussen had crashed into the wall just ahead of Perez, causing the Mexican to lose control and slide into the barriers himself. The incident left Perez frustrated and disappointed, as he had been hoping to challenge for pole position on the notoriously difficult Monaco street circuit. "It was a very tricky and difficult weekend for Checo and the team," said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. "We'll have to investigate what happened, but it's clear that we need to improve our qualifying performance if we want to compete for the championship." The crash also raised questions about team orders within Red Bull, as Max Verstappen was instructed to let Perez through on the final lap of qualifying but refused to do so. Verstappen's actions led to speculation that he may be unhappy with Perez's performance, or that he is simply not willing to play a supporting role to his teammate. Whatever the reason, the incident has cast a shadow over Red Bull's Monaco weekend and will likely lead to further tension within the team.
