The Burden Of The Ring

Why did Frodo leave Middle-earth at the end of Lord of the Rings?

The burden of the Ring

Frodo Baggins, the unassuming hobbit who played a pivotal role in the defeat of Sauron, the Dark Lord, bore the weight of the One Ring for much of his life. The Ring's evil influence corrupted his mind and body, twisting his thoughts and causing him great pain. By the end of the War of the Ring, Frodo had become a shadow of his former self, exhausted and broken by the burden he had carried.

The need for healing

After the destruction of the One Ring, Frodo was granted permission to sail to Valinor, the Undying Lands where the Valar, the gods of Middle-earth, reside. This was done in recognition of his sacrifice and suffering, and to give him the chance to heal both physically and mentally from the wounds inflicted by the Ring. Frodo also wished to be reunited with Bilbo Baggins, his uncle and the former Ring-bearer, who had also been granted permission to sail to Valinor.

The letting go of Middle-earth

Frodo's departure from Middle-earth was a bittersweet moment. He was saddened to leave behind his friends and the Shire, the home he loved, but he knew that it was time for him to move on. The burden of the Ring had left its mark on him, and he needed to find peace and healing in Valinor. Frodo's departure also symbolized the end of an era in Middle-earth, as the forces of darkness had been defeated and the world entered a new age of peace and prosperity.
